Well, that had been unexpected. It was like something out of one of those terrible science fiction films Clint liked to make her watch: one minute she had been sitting in her apartment, going over her investigative notes, and the next a portal opened up in her living room, sucked her throw, and deposited her unceremoniously in the middle of some great forest.

“We're not in Kansas anymore...” Natasha muttered to herself as she looked around in disbelief. She was lucky she adapted easily to strange situations, and having fought off an alien invasion not long ago didn't hurt when encountering something so unusual. Still, for a long moment she pressed her back to the nearest tree and just sat there, trying to gain her bearings and running the incident over and over again in her mind.

She wasn't dreaming, that much was obvious. She hadn't been drugged, of that she was certain. This wasn't an illusion, it was far too real. The grass even felt cold under her fingertips. She could only conclude for now that this was really happening, so the next question was how? What could have caused this?

It had been a perfectly normal evening. She had just been sitting on her sofa, going over once again all her clues and presumptions regarding Clint's disappearance, though they didn't amount to much. Then the portal appeared and she had vanished into it and appeared here.

She had been thinking of Clint and she had vanished.

Clint. Vanished.

How does a man vanish without even the smallest trace that even the best super spy in the world couldn't even find? He vanishes to another world.

It was amazing. Here she was in this strange place, knowing not how she got there, why, or what dangers could be lurking around her, but for that moment all she felt was overwhelming relief. These past five weeks had been torture, none of it had made any sense. Maybe Clint had been taken, maybe he had been killed, or maybe Loki had messed with his head so badly he had run, but in any of those cases Natasha was certain she would have found him. Now it all made sense.

Well, except for the fact that there were random portals to other worlds opening up in New York without some magic alien sceptre to control them.

Okay, first thing's first: search her surroundings for an indication of which direction she should be traveling.

Okay, "stay" had probably meant "stay put," like it always had in the past, but there had been this butterfly, okay? This tiny little one a color like Astrid's hair had been, only a lot lighter and a lot softer, maybe. Like...

Toothless frowned slightly, laying on his back at the bottom of a tree, hands curiously fiddling with a flower he'd found by one of the roads on his little journey. He didn't quite know where he was anymore, but the... His frown deepened a little as he thought for the word. What had the humans called it?

Sih-tee? Sit-e? Yeah, that thing! That had long melted off behind him as he wandered out after the butterfly, following it from the small shop stall that had held several vases of flowers in its wooden arms and bounding after it out of the Market's limits before he'd lost track of it somewhere between there and here.

Probably when he'd found his flower and now there were lots of trees around. The trees that were around here weren't unlike anything he had seen before, but they differed slightly from the ones at home. These trees had broad, flat leaves while most of the trees around Berk had possessed finer and pointer ends, sticking out every which way - needles.

He gave the flower an investigative sniff before eyeing it a few moments longer, still getting used to how the petals felt against his soft flesh instead of what he was much more used to: a fireproof outer layer of darkly colored scales.

Being a human was weird.

Toothless blinked the sky beyond the petals and the leafy rooftop of the trees back into focus and found a light sigh breaking free of his lips. Yes, his humans had been odd and annoying at times, but he found himself... worrying... Wondering...

It wasn't unusual that Hiccup couldn't find him sometimes, but, usually, with enough calling or another letting the young man bobble around and giving enough exasperated sighs, Toothless would give in and go out to meet him.

What would Hiccup think when he didn't come? Sure, it had been different with him becoming chief of the tribe and Toothless taking the title of alpha of the dragons, but...

Again, the young man was frowning, sadly this time. It was a strange feeling, sadness. He didn't like it. It'd been different in the past. He could fix it, he could defend Hiccup from what he perceived as threats, they could be there for each other...

And now..?

He was drawn from his thoughts by a decently sized thud. Toothless shot up into sitting, the flower falling to the ground as he dropped it from his grasp. He was tensed slightly and a wariness crept into his eyes. Cautiously, he drew himself to his feet. Humans walked on two legs instead of all four limbs that they had and he'd had to adapt to the habit quickly. People tended to look at you a little funny when you didn't do that and he had found it pleasantly surprising that, while his first turns had been a little shaky, it hadn't been terribly unfamiliar. He'd been able to do it before.

The balance of everything was a little different not having wings and a tail though...

He recognized sound that he could guess were words - some were vaguely familiar and some he hadn't heard at all before, but, sure enough, after he'd carefully crept forward through the trees a bit, he could safely place the speech to a redheaded woman sitting against one of the trees.

She hadn't been there before... Or he thought she hadn't been, at the very least. Maybe she had arrived like he had? People said something about portals dropping people off from far-away lands in gossip. He wasn't sure that the couple that had taken him in believed he was one such case, but then his was a complicated one and he had a feeling that, even if he could speak, his story was not one many would believe.

He gave her a quick once-over assessment from head to toe, head cocking softly to the side as he quirked a brow slightly at her - an attempted equivalent of asking if she was alright. She looked to be so, but looks weren't a good judgement. He had personal experience with that.

But no, he didn't recognize her. Greetings... Right. Manners. An uncertain half-smile crossed his features then. For a brief flash of a second, his mouth opened as if to attempt speech, but it quickly closed again and his lips pursed like he'd been getting ready to do something he felt he shouldn't have.

Which was almost the truth. "Hello" was a pretty basic word, he'd learned over his time with humans, both previously and now, but everything still came out slow and stuttered and occasionally not as it should have.

Instead, he gave a slight, awkward wave before curiosity flickered into his features.

Obviously, he didn't have great interaction skills, but practice made perfect, right? Maybe?

She searched the ground for signs that other humans may have passed this way, slowly expanding her search as she found nothing that didn't belong in a forest so seemingly vast and peaceful. No footprints, no litter, just pure and untouched nature. It almost made her feel a bit guilty for disturbing it.

As she continued to search she started to get the distinct feeling that she was being watched. Years of training had honed her senses, and a good spy had to have good instincts. Continuing to play the part as if she didn't notice, she pretended to be exasperated, standing and propping her hands on her hips while inconspicuously searching the surrounding area with just her eyes.

Despite the feeling, she was still surprised when a young man suddenly stepped boldly into view. She tried to play it casual but he silently and openly studied her, and that was never something that didn't make her uncomfortable.

Eventually he smiled and opened his mouth to speak before clapping it shut again without a word. Furrowing her brow, it was Natasha's turn to cock her head. A moment later he waved, but still said nothing, his expression awash in curiosity.

Silently, she waved back.

She did look confused, but, then again, most people kind of did that with him, he had noticed. They didn't understand why he wouldn't or couldn't really talk and hand motions trying to explain it all, he'd found, didn't always work.

Leaving something up to pure interpretation left a lot up to chance and put a lot of trust in one mind to think like another and that was hardly good odds to stake a bet on.

But she at least waved back and Toothless brightened a bit at the fact. At least one thing had gone right in this encounter, yeah? Unfortunately, he didn't really know how to clear up the confusion on either of their parts.

He chewed slightly at the inside of his lip - it was a habit he'd noticed some people had when they were thinking and he'd started using it once he'd turned into this almost unconsciously. Where to start..?

Usually introductions were where people started, but this wasn't exactly a normal meeting and people tended to only give him more strange looks when they got his name, usually from the couple that had taken him in because they actually had a good grasp on this whole communication thing, so he'd only ever explained it once.

But this woman seemed out of place. She wasn't dressed like any of the natives and what he'd seen when he'd stumbled upon her seemed to support such a notion, so he made a vague oval-like motion with his hands, outlining it in the air and then sticking a hand through the middle before looking back at her. There was a beat of silence as he fumbled for what word he wanted to use. 'Portal' was the thing he kept hearing about bringing people, but 'newcomer' and 'outsider' were words he had heard many more times, so they seemed to be the easiest of his options. "You... new..?" Or that worked.

The words formed slowly and a frown still lingered on his features, the tones a bit shaky and his voice threatening to crack on him. He looked at her uncertainly.

So far, so good?

He smiled so brightly at her acknowledgment but did little more. She watched him study her, and did the same in return. The way he was acting... her first assumption was that there was a language barrier. She wasn't sure why he would assume she didn't speak his language with just a look, but then maybe she didn't look like the other people here. He was the first person she had seen, so who knew what everyone else looked like? She had seen alien beings before, and while those like Thor and Loki could pass for human, the Chitauri definitely could not.

Still, he looked human enough. Maybe he had seen her arrive? If he had seen her appear out of nothing, if he knew of others that had done the same, that could explain everything.

He was trying to sign something, but it definitely wasn't ASL. Still, was there a chance he could know that language? A moment later, though, he spoke, and while it was only two words it said a lot. He was hesitant when he spoke, as if searching for each individual word and how they fit together. English certainly wasn't his first language, of that she was sure, but what she didn't know was how much he understood. He looked very unsure of himself so she smiled encouragingly.

“Yes, new,” she replied with a nod. “You live here?” she tried, gesturing to the land around them and watching him for comprehension.

The female didn't seem to grasp what he was trying to symbolize, but if she actually had gotten it, he was almost certain he actually would've been surprised. There were a lot of things that were roundish in shape, after all, and the fact that he was a random stranger that kind of happened across her just didn't do anything to help with his language barrier.

Listening and learning to associate was one thing. He could comprehend a good bit, but actually speaking it? It was understandably a steep learning process since it was an entirely new concept to him.

But she offered him confirmation with an affirmative nod and recognizable words and he smiled again. The encouraging nature of her expression was also quite helpful. Maybe this wouldn't be a total disaster after all, right?

But it faded slightly at her question. "Live here" as in "home" was a complicated subject for him and he found his teeth sinking into his lip just slightly again as he looked around uncertainly, following her gesture to the woods around them before his eyes dropped to the forest floor as he dug at the ground slightly with his shoe.

The balance of the action felt weird, so he was quickly righting his posture to distribute his weight back onto both of his feet and looking back over at her. She had asked a question, however difficult it was for him to answer and not just because of his communication difficulties this time, and it was rude to not answer when he knew what kind of one he wanted to express.

"No..," he trailed uncertainly, a slight frown twisting at his somewhat troubled features. "Not... here," he said, gesturing to the woods around them as she had before him.

The trouble was that he didn't have all of the words to explain how home was not anywhere to be found, but he'd somewhat gained a new one here in this Albion. Her appearing seemingly out of nowhere seemed to put her in a similar situation.

The home he had here just wasn't... Well, here. "Lost," he tried the word carefully, pointing to himself then. The people that had taken him in had a map though. He'd looked over it quite a bit - one of the many things he was trying to take in with this strange new life and world that had been thrust upon him so suddenly.

It'd be too complicated to really draw. He hadn't gotten familiar enough with it yet to attempt that for this stranger.

"Albion," he offered, making a bigger gesture than before to try to show that he meant more than just the woods before his eyes turned back to her again and he pointed to her, "You lost..?"

He once again fell into contemplative silence, looking just as uncertain as before. She wasn't sure if he'd understood her or not, wasn't sure how to interpret his actions, which threw her completely for a loop. Usually she could figure a person out within minutes and know exactly how to manipulate them to get what she needed, but this one she couldn't. There was an unknown quality about him that she couldn't quite place, like he was uncomfortable in his own skin, more like a young child than a grown adult. Perhaps he had a disability, in which case she was completely out of her element. That wasn't something she had ever been trained to deal with, as those were not the people the Black Widow was ever sent after.

She let the silence stretch out, let him process her question and try to understand. After a long moment he responded in the negative, and while it was promising that he understood, that certainly wasn't what she wanted to hear. She needed someone from this place that could answer her questions, not someone as confused as she was.

He elaborated a little, and not it was Natasha who was unsure. Did he mean he was merely not from this surrounding woods, but that this... realm? Universe? Land? Whatever this place was, could he still be from here? He further dashed her hopes, though, by confirming that he was much like herself: lost.

Then he offered a word she did not understand: Albion. A word? Perhaps his name? But he gestured around them, wider than before. Could that be what this place was? He seemed to be speaking and understanding English at least serviceably, so she had no reason to think that he simply meant “forest”, or something similar. When finally he asked his question, Natasha paused to consider it. What good would it do her to lie in this situation? She could see no benefit too it, so she nodded. “I'm looking for a town,” she offered. A city seemed less likely from such a great forest. “Or a village?” It was probably too much, but until she figured out a better way to communicate it would do.

Speaking of home, the couple would probably be worried if they found he was gone. If he hadn't been in the company of another, he felt like he would've likely facepalmed. He didn't try to run off, he swore. The only time he'd ever tried to do it was for games; there was always a way home and he always took it.

The beginnings of a frown dared to start toying at his features at the silence between him and the stranger and he felt his teeth lightly graze yet again at his lower lip. That was probably a bad habit, wasn't it?

He couldn't help it though. He didn't like this feeling of uneasy uncertainty or anxiety or whatever in this strange world you wanted to call it. The last times he'd had to deal with anything along this time had been more in a situation where he could fight back against the cause of it. Actually, the last time he'd really, really had to face it on his own was back before the Vikings had come to see dragons as allies, before he met Hiccup.

He wanted to help her, really, he did. He just couldn't help but get the feeling that the barriers between his and her level of communication being the same weren't exactly allowing him to do that.

Nope, can't think like that. Problem. Solution. Positive. Gotta stay positive. They could work through this, right?

He'd worked through bringing two different species from warring with and fearing each other to working and living together amicably and even being friends. He'd lived through someone trying to turn him against his one greatest friend.

It'd all be alright. He just had to focus and everything could fall in its place.

She took a moment to consider her answer to his question before speaking again. Town and village.

Toothless regarded the woods around them. Hiccup and him had spent a lot of time exploring and mapping things. Sure, one tree looked a lot like another, but pay attention to the details and there were differences.

Maybe he could get back to Bowerstone, and that was a city and there was lots of people there. They could probably help her and him get whatever they needed and get them wherever they needed to go, right?

"Bowerstone," he tried carefully as he glanced back at her briefly and regarded her closely for a moment before he was nodding, seemingly in agreement with his own idea. "Bowerstone is... city. Yes?" A smile reappeared across his features. "Come," he said, waving a hand for her to follow.

"Find Bowerstone," he repeated with another nod, starting to carefully weave back through the trees to where he had been sitting before. He had come from the opposite direction, so that would get them started, right?

Sooner or later, they'd have to bump into something, wouldn't they?

Every time she spoke he looked confused, like he had to process each individual word, then all of them together, then try to figure out how it applied to their situation. She had thought maybe he could help her, but now she was wondering if he would only be a hindrance. She had to find civilization, had to figure out where she was, and start trying to find out how she had come to be here. This young man knew about the portals so there were others like her, others that had been ripped from their homes and dropped here. She had to find them, had to find out if they knew anymore than her.

She had to find Clint.

Natasha was convinced he was here, it was the only explanation that made sense, which was funny considering how little sense the whole situation made. Clint would not have just run off like that, could not have run off in a way that she couldn't find him, nor could he have been taken without leaving a single trace behind. He had to be here.

Returning to studying her surroundings, she turned her attention to the young man when he finally spoke again. Bowerstone, she committed the name to memory, and when he called it a city she felt the first spark of hope that maybe this interaction was not completely hopeless. Maybe he couldn't offer any verbal answers, but if he could lead her to this Bowerstone then it would be all worthwhile.

He turned and started off, and she didn't hesitate to follow. She would keep her eyes out and her wits about her, of course, as she could never be too careful, but this was the best option she had right now. If he was leading her into some sort of trap, then he would deal with the consequences. “You have seen others come from these portals?” she asked, falling into step beside him. “You can just nod if you have, you don't have to speak.” She had started to develop a theory that perhaps he understood her perfectly well, and it was his own words that he struggled so long with. If she could make all her questions yes or no questions then perhaps they could communicate well enough.

It'd be just like navigating with Hiccup when they would go exploring and mapping the areas around Berk, right? Just on the ground instead of in the air now. Of course, it'd be much easier if he could just fly and get the added range of view to know that they were heading in the right direction, not to mention that it would be much faster to travel that way. Alas, the past was the past and no good would come of dwelling upon what was lost at the moment.

The female quickly fell into step behind him and it wasn't at all long before he recognized the place where he had been sitting before he had been drawn out of his thoughts by her arrival and he paused briefly to assess the surrounding area before moving again, carefully retracing his steps. He'd had a bit on his mind at the time and that made it a little bit more difficult to remember the way, but the first step to doing anything was to believe that you could, right?

He glanced over at her as she asked him another question, another frown starting to flicker into shape on his features before she told him he didn't have to speak and he finally nodded.

He had, but that just didn't seem to cut it in his mind. "Yes," he added after a brief moment. "Me," he said, pointing at himself. When he had it out, a little bit of a sigh broke his lips; he felt better with that being out and between them, but he made no attempts to explain further. He wasn't really sure he had all of the words to do that.

His watchful and attentive eyes had already turned back to the woods around them though. He had only made the journey once, after all, and the importance of both of them getting back to the city was not entirely lost on him. At least there, he knew where he was and there, the stranger now in his company could find the help that she needed for whatever she might need it for.

She'd need some of it with her being new and all, he was sure. It was easy to get lost if you didn't know where you were going, as he could attest to, and he had been warned that most of the regions were dangerous. He was not naturally armed as he had been before; alone and with little sense of direction, he was vulnerable.

"Vulnerable" was not a feeling Toothless really liked.

Even as he lead her through the forest he didn't seem entirely certain of where he was going; if anything it looked as if he was following a trail, maybe... retracing his steps? They were going back the direction he had first appeared from so it was entirely possible, and it made sense. If he came from Bowerstone then retracing that route would be the smart option.

He seemed pleased enough when she told him he didn't have to answer verbally, but even after he nodded he still spoke. He was certainly proving a difficult one to figure out. It didn't really matter, though, because the extra information he provided by speaking was exactly what she'd wanted to know. He was from a portal as well, from some other world, just like her.

How many of them were there? Was he from her world, or were these portals popping up in other dimensions too? Or other times? She had so many questions, but who had the answers? Certainly not this young man. Did anomalies like the portal appear naturally or was someone creating them? That was probably the biggest question, because if someone was controlling them then they could be... persuaded to send her back home. Eventually. They could also be stopped.

She wasn't sure what else to ask this man, or what to say, so she went for the most basic of conversation. “My name is Natasha.” No point lying here, it wasn't like anyone would know who she was anyway.

The silence almost felt awkward, but the former dragon didn't allow himself too much room to really dwell on it, keeping the vast majority of his focus on navigating back through the trees. Moving on from where he had been under the tree was a bit difficult, but possible. Some heightened senses from his time as a dragon certainly was helpful.

His company evidently was aware of the silence herself, so she finally offered a name. He paid careful attention to how it sounded out and repeated it back to himself a few times silently in his head.

It'd probably be nice to give her his name in return, right? It was an odd one to most humans, he already knew, but he could say the same to some of them in return, couldn't he?

"Toothless," he responded after that brief moment. It was probably the thing that had come out of his mouth easiest with very little hesitation about the sounds, unlike his other attempts at speech. It was a much more familiar sound, he supposed. After all, it was his name; he'd heard it loads of times when he was a dragon.

And, as odd as it may sound in this "life," he couldn't think about changing it. It was what he was used to and it was perhaps one of the only easy-to-reach-for thing he had that connected him back to home.

"I was... not... this..." He struggled with explaining it because something compelled him to do so, giving a gesture to himself, his full height. His nose wrinkled slightly. That just wasn't... specific enough... "Not... human.., at home... Then portal and-" he gave a slight shrug of his shoulders and a softly troubled frown settled on his lips.

"But I knew humans. We lived together... in peace..." Of course, it was much more complicated than that. "Not always," he added softly, "not before... Changed."

What would they think if they could see him now? They'd probably be shocked.., but beside that... What would they think?

Toothless? That was his name? It didn't seem very fitting, as he clearly had a full mouth of teeth, but perhaps that was the point. Maybe it was a nickname like Tiny, where the person usually called that was usually very large. A real name would have been nice, but if that was what he wanted to be called then she wouldn't argue, though it was probably obvious in that brief moment that she found it odd.

She thought of continuing the pleasantries with the usual 'nice to meet you', but he seemed to be struggling a bit, as if he wanted to speak further, so she remained silent, giving him all the time he needed.

As it turned out she needed the time to process what he was telling her.

Not human. What did he mean by that? Did he perhaps mean something more, like Thor? But no, he was something different before and human now. How was that possible? A portal from one world to another she could believe, having seen it with her own eyes back in New York with the Chitauri, and now the on that brought her here, but a portal that also changed the being it was transporting?

“The portal made you human,” she said to clarify, and even saying it out loud didn't help. This was more serious than she had thought. She wanted to ask what he had been if he hadn't been human, but was that something you could just ask someone? It didn't seem right, but nothing about this was.

It always came back to the same questions: what were these portals, why were they taking people, and where was this place?

Vanish into the night with me, we're racing heartbeats, feel the power arrest me like shadows on concrete, gotta get away, gotta escape from the daylight, I can see the way painted beneath the moon. Hold on for dear life until it's all gone. We'll come alive and set fear on fire, we'll set fear on fire.

He didn't miss her moment of confusion, but it didn't really phase him at this point. Everyone who had heard it had experienced that moment, but, so far, everyone seemed to accept it and Natasha seemed no different about it.

He remained quiet to let her have a few moments to process all of what he said before she questioned him just to be sure of what he'd said and he gave a silent nod. He couldn't help the touch of sadness in his eyes. He missed home. Things were so strange here... Not everything was new, but it was still a learning experience.

If only it hadn't all happened and he was still back home and things were normal. He would've much preferred that. Alas, that was not the case and there was, so far, nothing they could do about it.

He took in a deep breath softly and shook his head, attempting to once again clear it. "It is... strange..." he offered quietly, focusing again on the route back to Bowerstone.

What else was there to say, after all?

Well, this was more than a little troubling. Transportation was one thing, but transformation? She was having a hard time wrapping her head around that. This wasn't like Bruce, transforming into the Hulk when he got angry; this was an outside force changing a living creature into an entirely different one.

Natasha fell silent, ruminating this over and over in her mind. What had Toothless been before? It certainly explained his limited speech and trouble understanding. Why human? Why would he be human now? Was that what the portal did, change everything it stole into humans? Or did it change creatures into other things as well? Would it change humans into something else?

Her head was swimming, and no matter what angle she approached this with, she couldn't find the logic in it. If it was someone looking for slaves surely the portal would be directed to a particular place so they could be captured. What other reason could there be, though? It didn't make any sense, and Natasha was not a fan of things that didn't make sense.

Toothless sighed beside her and she nodded in reply. “Very strange,” she replied, and fell silent again. Against her better judgment she found herself asking the question she couldn't shake, the one possibly question he likely had the answer to. “What were you before? If you don't mind me asking.”
