ADAM FRANKENSTEIN
STRANGER IN TOWN

Adam was a big man, tall and built of solid muscle and bone, but despite that he could move surprisingly quietly when he chose to. It was largely a matter of slowing down and watching where one put one's feet, both of which he was good at. Lacking any grand goals to accomplish and not spurred by intimations of mortality, he was content to live his life day to day, taking each as it came. If he needed to move quickly, say to evade pursuit or get somewhere before dark, he did, but for the most part he didn't hurry.

That was the case that evening as he made his way through the gathering fog to his hideaway. And he hoped it stayed that way – though the posters he'd seen offering a bounty for the creature known as the 'Patchwork Man' suggested he couldn't count on it. Granted, he'd never exactly been popular with normal people, and there had been a few occasions where mobs had formed spontaneously to attack him, but this was the first time he'd seen any planning or organization to the hostility.

It made the construct vaguely sad. Granted, he was accustomed to not being welcome, but the guardsman called Greg had been kind. That had given him a tiny hope that despite the reactions of the other guardsman, perhaps things would be different here. It seemed now, though, that that wasn't going to happen. And, given that he wasn't exactly unobtrusive, he wondered how long he could afford to stay in Bowerstone.

He still hadn't been able to figure out what had drawn him there in the first place, though there were things in the city he couldn't get in his normal nomadic wilderness existence, especially books like the one he currently had tucked in the satchel slung over his shoulder. The problem there was that as much as he enjoyed them, books had value and he lacked anything to leave in payment. The one he had now he'd 'borrowed' from a library and fully intended to return. Eventually.

He would start reading it tonight, Adam decided. Pausing at the mouth of the alley that led to his bolt hole, he brushed his hood back temporarily and cast a quick glance around. He saw nothing, though given the fog that didn't mean much. So, shifting the satchel's strap a little higher on his shoulder, he continued on.

Despite the communication problem and the fact that her guide hadn't really known how to get back to Bowerstone himself, somehow they had found their way to the city. And what a city. It was like stepping back in time to the middle ages, and Natasha figured her first order of business should be to find some appropriate clothes if she planned to blend in at all.

Okay, so maybe not her first order, but it was near the top of the list.

The first thing she had done was a quick survey of her immediate surroundings, pushing away any feelings brought on by the strange nature of the town until she had time to properly deal with them. She could try to figure out later why and how she had been sucked through a time warp, for now she just had to worry about the what and the who. She started getting strange looks right away, likely because of her clothing that consisted of sweat pants, a t-shirt and a pair of slippers. She had been lounging in her apartment, not expecting to go outside, but apparently she should have been more prepared.

She couldn't say that none of the townsfolk looked threatening, as some were pretty rough looking, but they didn't seem to pose an immediate threat, so she kept her head low and stuck with her companion until they were safely away from the more densely populated area.

Stealing wasn't something Natasha did often, but that didn't mean she wasn't good at it. In fact, she was an expert, and it wasn't long until she had a serviceable outfit including trousers, boots, and a hat that she tucked her striking red hair up into. She felt the slightest pang of guilt, but this was an necessary action she couldn't avoid, though it certainly made clear that she would have to look for a way to earn some currency. Before that, though, she had inquiries to make. Starting with the bars and food establishments, she described Clint to several patrons, and the relief she felt when she learned that someone matching his description had been in town was almost overwhelming. It didn't prove he had been here, it could be someone else that looked similar, but it gave her hope, and that was all she needed to start on a plan.

If Clint had been here before, and this was the bustling hub of Albion, then there was a good chance he would return. In the meantime she would stick close and keep her ear to the ground. And get on that earning thing.

While she was trying to figure out where she could get a job in this place, she just so happened to come across a poster that seemed like a great place to start. For someone with her skills, hunting wanted men, or monsters as the case may be, was the perfect fit. Who better to face down a monster than someone with her experience in the matter?

That's what brought her to this moment, lurking around the dark, foggy streets of Bowerstone, silently and inconspicuously following the hulking brute she suspected could be her mark. When he threw his hood back to reveal that scared face she was sure of it. She crept on, slowly closing the distance while she prepared to launch her attack.

ADAM FRANKENSTEIN
STRANGER IN TOWN

Pulling his hood back up again, Adam walked into the alley, still unaware of the petite woman slipping along behind him. He wasn't completely oblivious to his surroundings, noting minor sounds like the scratching of a rat's claws as it scuttled up a drainpipe and the quiet plip of water as fog condensed on cold metal roof flashing and dripped onto the cobblestones below, but his stalker was stealthy as a ghost.

Ahead of him, set at an angle between the pavers and the blank brick wall that marked the end of the alley, was a set of double cellar doors. The doors weren't locked but, made of solid brass, they were too heavy for a normal man to lift. Instead, they were designed to be opened by a steam-powered gear mechanism in the basement below, but the building had long been abandoned. Several of the cogs had come loose, only a few scraps of coal remained in the hod, and the boiler's seams were corroded and cracked at any event.

Reaching the doors, the construct knelt down on one knee, hooking his fingers around one of the lower corners where the two came together. Then, with a grunt of effort, he brought his feet beneath him and straightened again, heaving the metal panel up and to the side on surprisingly quiet hinges. Wan gaslight from a streetlamp behind him spilled on either side of his shadow, illuminating a flight of stone steps beyond descending into darkness.

On one of the top steps was a small lantern. It was plain and battered, but the wick was neatly trimmed and the oil reservoir almost full. Dropping down onto his haunches again, Adam picked it up and began fishing in his pocket for the tin of lucifers he carried there.

He hid his face once more, and Natasha slowed her pursuit. The way this 'monster' had been described, she expected him to be brainless and lumbering and full of rage, but he seemed to move cautiously, and to conceal himself best he could.

When he reached the end of the alley she stopped and observed him. The doors looked heavy, impossible to open without any mechanical advantage, but open them he did, though with some effort. When he stopped then to remove and light a lantern, it became undeniably clear that this wasn't the senseless creature he had been made out to be. She was certain it was the right mark, the description fit to a tee... at least physically. Mentally, though, she couldn't be sure without seeing how he interacted with others. Maybe he could function well enough, but was blood thirsty when not alone.

Only one way to find out.

Scuffing her feet to make noise and alert him to her presence, Natasha stepped slowly from the shadows. “Good evening,” she said, intense gaze fixed upon him.

ADAM FRANKENSTEIN
STRANGER IN TOWN

Startled at the sound of footsteps followed by a voice behind him, Adam spun around, glad that he'd put his hood back up again. The oil in the lantern in his hand sloshed a little at the sudden movement and as he shifted the light so that it wouldn't shine on his scarred face. Even when taken by surprise, he was accustomed to hiding at least that much and did so automatically.

At first what he saw caused him to stand still in puzzlement. The voice had been distinctly feminine, but the figure before him he took at first for a stripling, clad as it was in boots and trousers. Then, though, he moved the lantern sideways and down so that its illumination lit more of the face and body beneath the hat, and saw that the stranger was indeed female.

Adam blinked. There were, of course, women even in this part of town, but they didn't normally go around alone at night. Or, if they did, he certainly had never met one. And yet there one stood, regarding him calmly and as levelly as she could considering she had to tilt her head back to look up at him.

Baffled, Adam floundered for a moment for what to say. Obviously, he had to say something, as she'd spoken to him. He knew at least that much. A man, he would have told to go away or at best asked gruffly what he wanted, but women – the ones who didn't run screaming straight off, at any event – tended to be nicer to him.

"Are you lost, miss?" he asked finally, thinking that would explain both why she was here and why she had approached him.

He turned quickly, but he made no move to attack her despite having easy access to a weapon. She would have dodged the lantern if he'd thrown it, but he seemed more concerned with keeping himself in darkness than striking out.

She stood stock still, not wanting to further agitate him, and he stood just as still, watching her. After a moment of stillness he moved his lantern to better illuminate her and get a good look. Her dress seemed to confuse him, and honestly that wasn't surprising. Everyone she had talked to today had been confused by her, both before and after her change of clothes. Thankfully she was used to being stared at, though usually for different reasons. With her hair hidden and no makeup to further highlight her natural beauty, they looked at her more as an outsider than a pretty object. It was actually a nice change of pace.

This... this man, though, just seemed completely stunned and unsure how to proceed. Obviously this was a strange situation for him, and Natasha considered speaking further, but she needed to see if he would respond first, if he could respond.

Finally he did, and now it was her turn to be surprised, though she didn't show it. Could it be she had the wrong man? This was certainly not the inarticulate, bloodthirsty monster she had been led to believe she was hunting, but how many more men of his stature with scarred faces could their be in this town?

Luckily she was good at thinking on her feet.

“I'm new here,” she explained, shifting her weight from one foot to the other. “I was looking for a friend.” Sometimes the best lies were the truth.

ADAM FRANKENSTEIN
STRANGER IN TOWN

Adam turned the woman's response over in his head. She wasn't lost, she was just looking for a friend who was. That made sense. It was still a bad part of town for her to be wandering around in at night, though, whatever the reason. On the other hand, she'd also said she was new here, so she might not even know that this wasn't a good part of town. He could tell her, but then she might decide her friend was in danger and become even more determined to stay and find him. Or her.

As he pondered, Adam was aware the woman was staring at him. She was no doubt expecting him to say something, though she wasn't doing any of the things he'd seen women do to express impatience. She shifted her weight from foot to foot, but she wasn't tapping either of them or drumming her fingers. Her hands weren't on her hips, and her arms weren't folded across her chest. Still, he probably shouldn't make her wait too long.

"Uhm," Adam said finally. "What does your friend look like?" He didn't bother asking for a name, as while he'd seen most of the other people who lived around there, he'd never actually talked to them and didn't know their names. Hopefully, he'd recognize the description and be able to tell her where to find her friend, so she could go back somewhere safe.

He seemed to give her answer great deliberation, and Natasha was already running over ways to elaborate and make it more concrete. She didn't speak them, though; from her experience too much explanation often sounded false, so she would wait until he asked again before giving more information.

She shifted again, looking around a bit nervously, though it was all for show. Few women were so brazenly confident when wandering around dark alleys, so she had to play the part, even if she didn't dress for it.

Finally he spoke again, predictably asking for more. Of course she couldn't say that who she was looking for at this very moment looked exactly like him, but she could describe the real friend she had been searching for earlier, and would continue to search for until she found him.

“He's about this tall,” she began, holding her hand six or seven inches over her own head. “Sandy brown hair, blue eyes. Kind of a broad nose.” She could have talked about his scars, his smile, that crease he got in his forehead or how his eyes crinkled at the corners, but those were details few other people would notice, but they hadn't spent the past seven years studying Clint Barton.

ADAM FRANKENSTEIN
STRANGER IN TOWN

The woman seemed nervous, shifting and starting at shadows. Not that Adam blamed her. It was full dark and the fog had come in. Even under the widely-spaced gaslamps it was difficult to see more than two or three paces, and between them someone could be in arm's reach before you knew he was there. If he had ill intent, the first awareness you might have of his presence was when his knife slipped between your ribs, and most of those who were out and about in this area at night were not well-intentioned.

The construct listened closely as she described her lost friend, mentally comparing what she said with the other denizens of the Industrial Quarter he'd seen. The height and the nose sounded like a rag-and-bone man from a couple of alleys away, but his hair was dark and Adam was pretty sure his eyes were green. So when she finished, he shook his head. "I haven't seen anyone like that," he said. Then added a moment later, "I'm sorry."

Falling silent again, Adam shifted uncomfortably, uncertain what to do or say next. A gentleman – or even a normal man with a normal upbringing -- would have known to offer to see her safely home, but there was little normal about Adam, and he hadn't really had an upbringing at all. The alternative – inviting her in to shelter overnight – occurred to him still less. Grown men didn't voluntarily go with him into enclosed spaces, so he certainly didn't expect a woman to. If asked, he would do either, but the socialization to suggest them simply wasn't there.

She hadn't expected this... man to have seen Clint around, yet she couldn't help but feel a slight sense of disappointment when it was confirmed. Any hint of her best friend's whereabouts would be very welcome, and so far the response had been slim but promising enough. Even if she didn't know where to find him, she was at least certain he had passed this way.

”It's okay,” she said softly, playing up the disappointment in her voice. This man seemed lost for what to do next, and honestly Natasha felt the same. Normally she would just take him down by whatever means; alive if she could manage, but dead if the mission called for it. This situation felt different, though. The picture she had been painted simply did not match up here, at least not in any way beyond the physical. She could see where this man could be considered grotesque and frightening just to see him, but so far he had been polite, and not entirely unintelligent. Far from the monster she had signed up to hunt.

Perhaps this was a case like Banner, where he could appear mild mannered and friendly unless made angry. There were very few things Natasha was afraid of in her life, but the Hulk was one of them, and while she had worked together with him on the team, it would take some time to gain any level of comfort around him, or Bruce.

Could this 'monster' be the same? Someone mild mannered unless provoked? That didn't mean he wasn't dangerous, nor that he didn't do the things he was accused of, but how much was he at fault for? She couldn't just take him in without knowing.

“I think he might have just passed through. I guess I'll just... find somewhere to stay for the night and look elsewhere tomorrow,” she said. Her posture had changed to make her look more timid, lost, and confused. Where was she to go? What was she to do? She was only a poor, defenseless little female. "Is there an... an inn here that would be... safe?"

ADAM FRANKENSTEIN
STRANGER IN TOWN

"An .... inn?" Adam knew what inns were, more or less, they were just out of the question for him. Inns were places where normal people – which he wasn't – paid money – which he didn't have -- to sleep. Presumably they were more comfortable than the street, or at least safer, otherwise normal people wouldn't bother to stay in them and they would go out of business. "I don't know," he said. "I've never stayed in an inn."

Something about the question puzzled him, though, and he turned it over in his head, trying to figure out what it was. She'd said she wasn't lost, so that meant she must have been in Bowerstone long enough to learn her way around. So where had she been staying up until now, and why couldn't she go back there for the night? She was pretty, and not in the least bit frightening, so that wasn't it. Had she done something bad and they'd kicked her out? Or maybe it was far away, off in the fog.

"Have you lost your inn?" he asked carefully, "like your friend?"

She could easily test her theory; she could attack this man, verbally or physically, and see how he reacted. If rage turned him into a monster she could cause that rage... but first there was something else she was more interested in attempting to bring out in him. Anger was easy, everyone got angry, but she wanted to see compassion, humanity, in this person so feared and hated by others.

He seemed unsure about the word 'inn', and she wondered how sheltered he was. He seemed to speak well enough, but maybe his knowledge was limited. Or maybe he was like Toothless, a creature from another world turned human here.

“Yes, and inn. Or someplace I could rent a room for the night,” she explained further. He brought up a good point, she could return to where she had been before, but she had just arrived, still 'new', as she had told him earlier. But if he had misunderstood she could use that to her advantage. “There was a man. At the last one. He...” she took a shaky breath and looked away. “His intentions weren't good. I don't want to go back there.”

ADAM FRANKENSTEIN
STRANGER IN TOWN

Adam frowned slightly at the oblique reference to 'not-good intentions.' He'd spent a lot of time observing normal people from afar, and had noted the size-based pecking order that often seemed to prevail. Not that animals were any different, but animals were animals. Along the way, he'd formed a theory that it was big people being mean to little people that made people smaller than he was – which was practically everyone – think just because he was big that he planned to hurt them.

The construct was actually a bit surprised that this woman, who was on the small side even for her sex, didn't seem to be afraid of him. It was puzzling, but rather nice to have someone not cower away from him. In fact, he realized suddenly and with even more surprise, if anything she seemed to be cowering toward him, which was an even more novel experience.

"I don't know of any inns or rooms near here," Adam said with genuine regret. "And this is not a good place to be at night." Hesitantly, he came to a decision. "Do you want me to go with you to get you somewhere safer?"

He just wasn't getting it. Most men would catch her meaning and either step in to play hero, or pretend to do so while harbouring some not so great intentions themselves. Pray on vulnerability, that's what many would do in this situation, but this man seemed genuinely clueless and apologetic.

One thing was for certain: she was having a very hard time reconciling this man with the monster that had been described on the wanted poster.

Nodding at his assessment, Natasha looked around her as if just now realising that this place may be just as unsafe as the inn she had mentioned, and injected a bit of fear into her movements. She was jumpier, cagier. Come on, big boy, take the bait...

Finally he seemed to click in, and she turned back to him with the most grateful expression she could muster. “Would you mind? I hate to interrupt you...” But then begged the question: now what? Set him at ease, get his guard down, then attack? She could take on half a dozen men at once, so what was one big one? She needed the money, after all, but there was one problem: she wasn't sure she wanted to turn him in anymore. Usually she followed orders without thinking too hard on them, she was the head while Clint was the heart of their team, but with him gone maybe she had to be both this time.

ADAM FRANKENSTEIN
STRANGER IN TOWN

Adam moved his shoulders a little in an almost-shrug. He didn't utter any of the conventional platitudes, such as 'oh, I don't mind' or 'no interruption at all,' since he'd never learned them and they didn't come instinctively to him. They were some of the pretty little prevarications that oiled the gears of a society he'd never been part of, and he wasn't deceitful by nature. The reality was that he'd planned to hole up and read his new book, but he'd put that aside temporarily because books were static and people were ephemeral. He wasn't going to point that out, but neither would he just up and lie about it.

The streets were gaslit, albeit sporadically in spots, so with skill born of some practice, Adam extinguished the small hand lantern he held. Then, apparently either not anticipating or not fearing an attack by the diminutive redhead, the construct turned and crouched down again to return it to its place on the stairs. Once he heaved the door shut over them, his bolthole would once more be as secure as he could make it while he escorted Natasha on her fictional quest.
